Carmen Linking Info
To create a Link to electronic journal articles in your Carmen course site, there are three basic steps you will need to follow:
- Find and copy the Persistent URL for the article you wish to link.
- Add the proxy address before the URL, to permit students to get to the material when they are off-campus: in front of the pasted URL, type in http://proxy.lib.ohio-state.edu/login?url=
- Use the "Quick Link" function in the HTML Editor to add the link. Choose to Open in New Window* requiring the link to open in a new window.
*Note: Quick links to online journal articles only work when a new window is opened. In the Content Tool "Open a new Window" is not an option. However, the HTML Editor and Link tools do provide this option.
You should also include a copyright notification on the News or Content pages. See Carmen Copyright Considerations for more information.

For more help in integrating library resources into Carmen (such as finding persistent URLs for online journal articles), see the FAQ: Making Links to Library Resources from within Carmen Course Sites.
A multimedia tutorial from the University of Calgary about finding persistent URLs is also available.
Staff at the Health Sciences Library's ASK Desk (first floor) can help find persistent URLs. Reference librarians on duty at the ASK Desk can also provide assistance:
- Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.
- Monday - Friday, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
- Phone: (614) 292-4869; E-mail: Ask A Librarian
Sometimes, linking to online materials may not be possible or practical. It may be preferable to post PDFs for the material on your Carmen course site.
You may ask for help with creating PDFs at the “Do It Yourself” (DIY) workstations on the Health Sciences Library’s first floor. Assistance is available at the ASK Desk from 7:30 – 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. Please bring the material you want to link and a flash stick.
