| Part of the Library's Resource Management Department, Technical Services is responsible for much of the behind-the-scenes work of the library. While there are general divisions of workload within the department, many of these tasks are shared throughout the department. The department consists of the Collection Development and Resource Management Librarian, one Monographs Specialist, one Serials and Circulation Specialist, one Electronic Resources Coordinator and the Technical Services Supervisor. Unit Areas Bindery The Serials and Circulation Specialist, along with support from other departmental personnel, including several highly trained student assistants, handles print materials as they go to and from an off-site preservation binding specialist. Books This area includes all ordering and receiving functions related to the many monographic titles acquired by the library, including the weekly processing of approval plan materials and the processing of donated materials. The Monographs Specialist is responsible for uploading the New Book List Cataloging Copy cataloging covers the online cataloging of materials in both the serials and monographs areas. This function is handled predominantly by our Monographs Specialist but may be distributed throughout the department as situations demand. Electronic Resources Management This includes access, management, problem solving, subscription and records maintenance for health sciences electronic journals and databases. The Electronic Resources Coordinator works closely with the supervisor on subscription management, investigates new resources and services, assists with the cataloging and processing of new resources, and serves as the primary contact for problem resolution related to electronic journal and database access. Invoice Processing Invoice processing is a task handled by the Unit Head with support from the Monographs Specialist for materials ordered or received for payment by University Accounts Payable. Preservation Preservation functions are primarily supervised by the Unit Head. Highly trained students perform the bulk of the work applying protective covers, pamphlet binders, and a wide variety of damaged or missing page repairs. Print Journals Processing Receiving and handling of incoming journals on subscription, including identification and resolution of title changes and new titles, is handled predominantly by our Serials and Circulation Specialist with support from other departmental personnel, including several highly trained student assistants. |
