Biomedical Research

Biosis Previews (including Biological Abstracts)

  • Covers the worldwide biological literature, focusing on vital biological and medical research findings, pharmacological studies, and discoveries of new organisms.
  • Indexes articles from over 5,500 international journals and other resources such as international meetings, review articles, books, and monographs from 1980 to the present.
  • Select this database for information on patents or to limit searches to microorganisms, plants, or viruses.

MEDLINE

  • MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine’s premier database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, allied medical professions, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.
  • MEDLINE indexes articles from approximately 4,300 journals published in the U.S. and seventy other countries, from about 1960 to the present.
  • MEDLINE incorporates citations that were part of the separate databases AIDSLine, BioethicsLine, Cancerlit, and HealthSTAR.
  • At the Health Sciences Library, the MEDLINE database is available through several interfaces.  We particularly recommend  PubMed and Ovid Medline.  Both offer access to OSU and OhioLINK electronic journals.
  • PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE search interface, made available on its web site for the general public.
  • PubMed includes links to clinical trials information and MEDLINEplus, a source of consumer health information.

Science Citation Index (SCI)

  • Part of ISI’s Web of Science, SCI indexes cited references found in journals from over 150 scientific disciplines.
  • Covers over 5,000 scholarly science and technical journals from 1980 to the present.
  • In addition to subject and author searching, SCI permits tracking of references cited in journal articles. Use this feature to track the number of times a paper has been cited and who is citing it, and to track the history of an idea or research topic from its first communication to today.

SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts Service + more)

  • Developed by Chemical Abstracts; covers core areas of chemistry as well as related sciences such as biotechnology, agricultural chemistry, toxicology and environmental science.
  • Offers journal article citations and abstracts, patent information, substructures, polymers, biosequences, synthetics, etc.
  • Special software is needed to use this database. Connect to OIT Software to Go to download the software.

Clinical Medicine

ACP Medicine (Formerly Scientific American Medicine Online)

  • An authoritative source of information on all sixteen subspecialities of internal medicine. In addition, ACP Medicine offers information on topics such as occupational safety and health, advice for international travelers, normal laboratory values, the latest FDA approvals, and more.
  • Full-text information is enhanced by a large collection of medical images. Also includes links to PubMed citations and a CME program.
  • Use the Table of Contents Keyword Search option to do a quick, simple search. For more advanced search options, select the Search button on the Main Toolbar.

Cochrane Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (EBMR)

  • Consists of four databases: ACP Journal Club, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Clinical Trials, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness.
  • This set of databases offers journal citations and abstracts, full-text reviews, and/or the content of selected research articles to present the “best evidence” for clinical practice.
  • Search the EBMR databases directly or via MEDLINE. The version of MEDLINE included in this package allows users to restrict search results to articles which meet evidence-based criteria.
  • For assistance with EBMR, click the “Ask a Health Sciences Librarian” link on the main search screen. Questions will be forwarded to the Health Sciences Library’s reference desk.

Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine

  • Contains evidence-based information on herbs and natural remedies and the conditions they may be used to treat, as well as known or suspected drug interactions.
  • The guide addresses the amount and type of evidence to support use of these herbs and supplements, as well as how patients may be using them regardless of current evidence.

MD Consult

  • Offers a comprehensive collection of full-text information across a broad range of medical specialties.
  • The Core Collection consists of reference books, practice guidelines, journal articles, drug references, medical news, and patient education resources.
  • “Clinical Topic Tours” and “Case of the Week” are popular features for medical students and residents.
  • Create a user name and password to access the Personal Edition of MD Consult, in order to tailor searching to a particular clinical interest and to access personalized patient education handouts, a CME service, and saved searches and bookmarks in the “My Folder” area.

AHFS Online

  • For over 40 years, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has published AHFS Drug Information.
  • This comprehensive source of evaluative drug information assesses the advantages and disadvantages of various therapies, including interpretation of various claims of drug efficacy.
  • AHFS contains a monograph on virtually every molecular drug entity available in the US.

Clinical Pharmacology

  • Contains current, concise and clinically relevant drug monographs for all U.S. prescription drugs, hard-to-find herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products, and new and investigational drugs.
  • Monographs include description, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, indications, dosing by indications, including FDA-approved and off-label uses, and pediatric, adults and geriatric dosing.
  • Includes patient education records in English and Spanish.
  • Updated quarterly.
  • Search by generic or brand name, indication, contraindication, adverse reaction or therapeutic classification.

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (IPA)

  • Major areas of coverage include: Drug reactions, Toxicity, Investigational drugs, Drug evaluations, Drug interactions, Biopharmaceuticals, Pharmaceutics, Drug stability, Pharmacology, Preliminary drug testing, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Drug analysis, Drug metabolism, Pharmacognosy, Methodology.
  • Indexes over 750 pharmaceutical, medical, and health-related journals published since 1971.
  • Choose this database to find information specific to pharmaceuticals and the pharmaceutical industry – technology, regulations, and economics.

  • Search the collection simultaneously, search each database individually, or search by a particular category of information.

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database

  • Provides information on most herbal and dietary supplements used in the western world. Information is available on evidence-based safety and effectiveness ratings for each natural medicine listed in the database.
  • There are two separate sections of natural product information in this database. One is a compilation of over 1,000 monographs on natural medicines or ingredients. The other consists of several thousand brand name products and their ingredients.
  • Search by the product’s scientific name or any of its variety of names or synonyms.

Pharmacist's Letter

  • A subscription service for pharmacists covering new developments in drug therapy, and trends in pharmacy practice.
  • Started in 1985, the Letter provides concise updates and advice. The Detail-Documents provide in-depth coverage answering many specific questions related to each topic.

AGELINE

  • Produced by the AARP, AGELINE focuses on social gerontology, the study of aging in psychological, health-related, social, and economic contexts.
  • Indexes journal articles, books, book chapters, and videos published from 1978-present.
  • Try the “Suggest Terms” or Online Thesaurus when you need help with search terminology.
  • There are a limited number of simultaneous user “seats” for this database. If busy, try logging on again at a later time.

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and allied Health Literature)

  • Focuses on nursing and allied health fields such as dietetics, physical therapy, medical records, occupational therapy, etc.
  • Includes information published from 1982 to the present: journal articles, books, book chapters, pamphlets, dissertations, audiovisuals and educational software. Also contains virtually all publications of the American Nurses' Association and the National League for Nursing.
  • To find articles discussing research study methodology and results, chose “Research Articles” from the Search Limits screen.

Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI)

  • Provides access to information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science.

PsycINFO (Psychological Abstracts)

  • Covers publications in many health-related fields, including psychiatry, nursing, health administration, pharmacology, rehabilitation, and epidemiology. Resources selected for PsycINFO generally have a psychological, behavioral, or cognitive focus.
  • Includes citations from Psychological Abstracts back to 1927 and all American Psychological Association journals back to their first issues.

Social Science Citation Index (SSCI)

  • Part of ISI’s Web of Science, SSCI provides access to multidisciplinary literature and cited references on such topics as gerontology, mental health, nursing, public health, rehabilitation, social work, and substance abuse.
  • In addition to subject and author searching, SDCI permits tracking of references cited in journal articles. Use this feature to track the number of times a paper has been cited and who is citing it, and to track the history of an idea or research topic from its first communication to today.

Applied Science and Technology Abstracts

  • Covers science and technology areas such as biomedical engineering, robotics, and medical device standards.
  • Indexes over 400 journals, including many Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) publications, from 1983 to the present.

Business Insight

  • This database contains global analyst research reports in the areas of healthcare, consumer goods, energy, finance, commerce, and technology with in-depth forecasts. The reports are global or regional in scope with the latest news and market commentaries as well as fast follow-up analyses.
CAB Abstracts
  • Covers significant research and development in fields such as biotechnology, genetics, human health and nutrition, and veterinary medicine. Approximately 18% of this database covers animal health, and about 9% covers human health.
  • Indexes articles from over 10,000 journals, conference proceedings, technical books, and other selective resources from 1972 to the present.
  • There are a limited number of simultaneous user “seats” for this database. If busy, try logging on again at a later time.

Dissertation Abstracts (Digital Dissertations)

  • The authoritative source for information on doctoral dissertations and master’s theses, covering approximately 3,000 subject areas.
  • Since 1988, all dissertation and thesis citations include abstracts.
  • Dissertations published since 1997 are available full-text and offer previews.
  • Search by author, keyword, school, degree, advisor, or a combination of fields.

History of Science, Technology, and Medicine

  • Medical history coverage is provided by the Welcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine (UK).
  • Indexes journal articles, proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations from 1975 to the present; updated annually.
  • There are two search forms to choose from and the online help screens provide useful search tips.

IEEE Xplore

  • The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a leading authority in technical areas such as biomedical informatics and technology, telecommunications, and more.
  • Choose this database for access to the full-text of IEEE transactions, journals, magazines and conference proceedings published since 1988, and all IEEE Standards.
  • Search for information in a particular publication or search the entire database by keyword or author.

Journal Citation Reports (JCR)

  • As a comprehensive resource for journal evaluation, JCR presents statistical data that provides one way to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject category.
  • JCR covers journals indexed by either Social Science Citation Index or Science Citation Index.
  • JCR Impact Factors can be used to provide a gross approximation of the prestige of journals.

Lexis-Nexis

  • In addition to the full-text legal and business information, Lexis-Nexis Academic also indexes a number of full-text medical newsletters and journals.
  • Within the Medical Section, there are three smaller sets of research categories:
  • “Medical News” indexes the full-text of newsletters and journals covering such topics as health care business, medical devices, and health law.
  • “Medical and Health Journals” indexes several well-known medical and health law journals including Health Affairs, Lancet, and Public Health Reports.
  • “Medical Abstracts” is a version of MEDLINE. Choose to search the whole database (MEDLINE References), or use the pull-down menu to search specific specialty files such as dentistry or psychiatry. Click on the “Source List” button for available content in each section.

  • Select “Patient Handouts” from the main toolbar. Search by keyword, all topics, or conditions and treatments.
  • Many handouts are available in English and Spanish and can be limited to children, adults, or seniors.
  • If accessed through the Personal Edition, handouts can be customized with special instructions for individual patients.

UpToDate

  • Provides evidence-based answers to commonly asked questions in clinical practice.  The system is designed to provide practical, concise information needed at the point of care.
  • Once connected to the database, simply click on the "Accept" button to agree to the licensing terms of usage.  The main search screen will appear.  Choose keyword searching or search via the Table of Contents. 
  • PLEASE NOTE:  UpToDate is not available from off-campus computers.  Please search UpToDate from computers in your campus office, computer lab, or clinic.

Patient Education

Alt-HealthWatch

  • Full-text information on complementary, alternative, and integrated approaches to wellness.
  • Provides coverage on both professional and consumer levels. If interested in content from professional journals only, consider limiting to scholarly (peer reviewed) journals.
  • To see which publications are indexed in Alt-HealthWatch, click on the “Choose Databases” button on link to the “complete title list.” To browse the contents of a particular journal, choose the “Publications” search button and select the title from the alphabetic list.

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)

  • This nursing and allied health database currently indexes 83 journals pertaining to patient or consumer health information.
  • Use the Limit menu to limit subject searches to the “Consumer Health” journal subset, or limit publication type to “Consumer Patient Teaching Materials.”

Clinical Pharmacology

  • Contains current, concise and clinically relevant drug monographs for all U.S. prescription drugs, hard-to-find herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products, and new and investigational drugs.
  • Search by generic or brand name, indication, contraindication, adverse reaction or therapeutic classification.
  • Use the “Refine Search” tab to limit search results to patient education materials in English or Spanish.

Health Source: Consumer Edition

  • Aimed at the consumer or patient, this database indexes the full text of nearly 200 health and medical science journals and over 1,000 pamphlets on various medical topics.
  • Includes access to Stedman’s Medical Dictionary.

Health and Wellness Resource Center

  • The database offers a mix of consumer and professional resources: dictionary definitions, encyclopedia entries, journal articles, pamphlets, and information on health organizations.
  • To see a list of the books, journals, and other publications indexed, select “List of Sources” from the top menu. Select “Search Tips” for advice on improving your search results.
  • Choose to use the basic (default) search form or the advanced form which offers more detailed search options. Consider limiting to full text only or to refereed journals.

MDConsult

  • Select “Patient Handouts” from the main toolbar. Search by keyword, all topics, or conditions and treatments.
  • Many handouts are available in English and Spanish and can be limited to children, adults, or seniors.
  • If accessed through the Personal Edition, handouts can be customized with special instructions for individual patients.

Micromedex

  • Choose the CareNotes System database from the main page. Search for patient education materials by keyword or by broad category.
  • Generally presented in both English and Spanish, materials cover both pre-care, inpatient care, and Discharge information on a variety of health topics.
  • The format allows customization of content, including patient or facility-specific information and practices. Content can be copied and pasted into word processors and adjusted for larger font size or adding/deleting text.
