Letter to OSU NIH-Funded Investigators
Dear OSU NIH Research Award Recipients:
By now, most of you have received an email notice from NIH summarizing the now mandatory Public Access Policy. The purpose of this letter is to share with you the details of the NIH Public Access Policy (NIH Notice NOT-OD-08-033), review the compliance process, and identify who you can turn to for advice and assistance at Ohio State.
The new policy requires all principal investigators (PIs) and award-associated authors to submit their peer-reviewed journal articles that arise from NIH funds to the NIH digital archive, PubMed Central (PMC). The Policy officially went into effect on April 7, 2008. The specifics of the new NIH Public Access Policy and compliance terms accompany this letter.
PMC is linked to — but differs from — PubMed, the National Library of Medicine's version of the MEDLINE database of citations and abstracts. PMC contains over half a million articles, most of which have a corresponding citation entry in PubMed. Depositing your works in PMC will increase the visibility of your research and possibly enhance the likelihood of early and increased citation and scholarly impact.
Assistance in meeting the compliance requirements is available from the following:
Prior Health Sciences Library: For up-to-date information about the Policy and submission details, please see the Prior Library’s Scientific Publishing Site
Ohio State University Libraries: For assistance with your author rights documentation, please see the OSU Libraries’ Rights Management Office
Your Sponsored Program Officer: Your SPO can assist you with citations to NIH-funded articles in all NIH applications beginning with the May 25, 2008 due date and all subsequent due dates.
Your Research Foundation Project Manager: Project Managers can assist with citations to NIH-funded articles in all NIH progress reports and access to other compliance announcements and tools.
Should you have questions beyond the scope of this letter, please contact us. We wish you continued success in your research endeavors.
Sincerely,
Susan Kroll AVP, Health Sciences Knowledge Management susan.kroll@osumc.edu
